LGBTQI LOVING KINDNESS DAY RETREAT at Spirit Rock
Saturday June 30, 2018, 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Community Meditation Center Teacher: John Martin
Cost: Sliding Scale $40 – 100
This LGBTQI Community retreat will be spent cultivating love and loving-kindness (Metta). The practice of loving-kindness was taught by the Buddha to cultivate the natural beautiful qualities of an open and loving heart. The practice begins with ourselves and expands outward for all beings. The cultivation of loving kindness supports a caring and balanced heart that is able to open to all the joys and difficulties of life.
In this day together, there will be instructions and teachings to develop this practice and to work with the challenges that may block the full expression of the heart.
Young Adults (18-26) and Seniors (65+ with limited income) are invited to attend this day for $45.

Awakening Our Hearts: Exploring White Privilege to Build Authentic Relationships Across Difference
with Arinna Weisman, Joan Doyle, Baruch Golden
Spirit Rock, Community Meditation Center
Saturday, March 11, 2017, 9:30am - 4:30pm
Cost: Sliding Scale $75 - $200. Please bring your lunch. Code AW1D17.
Details: For all who self-identify as white.
Buddhism has as its refuge and vision a heart that is unrestricted, luminous and free. As we practice The Eightfold Path, our hearts begin to open and call us to explore unconscious beliefs and behaviors that cause harm and suffering to others and ourselves. For example, we as white people are unaware of the ways we build identities of whiteness which cover our hearts and separate us from people of color.
By becoming aware of our group identity as white people and by owning this reality of privilege and access to power and resources, we are able to transform ourselves and our ability to be in authentic relationships, across differences. We begin to work towards the creation of multicultural communities by addressing the changes needed to bring about true inclusion. Through this process, we will have the opportunity to create structures and cultural norms that honor everyone in our sanghas.

Working with the Seasons: Bridging Indigenous Wisdom and Buddhist Practices, with Carol Cano
Sunday, January 8, 2017, 9:30am - 4:30pm
Spirit Rock, Community Meditation Center
In this cross-cultural daylong, we will bridge indigenous wisdom and Buddhist practices in the context of our modern culture. We will work with the season of Winter and explore how our practice can be enriched by working with Mother Earth, especially at this time when great changes are happening to her and the impact that has on all of us and seven generations into the future.
We will investigate our relationship into our own Nature as we cultivate a practice of deep listening and open to our hearts longing for a deeper understanding of what it's like to live fully engaged with all of life's mystery.
This daylong is for all levels of practitioners with a curiosity about how to integrate the wisdom of the indigenous and how to transform our relationship with Nature.
As my beloved teacher, the late Angeles Arrien, would remind us: What the ancestors are whispering to us at sunrise or sunset, maybe this is the one who wakes up and remembers...Maybe this is the one.

Coming Home to Who You Are: Discovering Your Natural Capacity for Love, Integrity and Compassion, with David Richo
Sunday, January 8, 9:30am - 4:00pm
Spirit Rock, Community Meditation Center
Life is a challenging journey. Though we hope that our lives will be easy, comfortable and serene, they are often complicated, conflicted and disappointing. Too many of us bear the scars of painful life experiences, suffer from low self-esteem, and become trapped in cycles of self-destructive behavior. And so the happiness we desire often eludes us.
To set our lives on a positive course, we can begin developing loving-kindness toward ourselves and others. When we learn to approach ourselves with friendliness and caring, the dynamics of our lives begin to shift. In the Buddhist and in other religious traditions, this is a pathway to happiness and spiritual growth.
In this Daylong we explore specific ways to grow in self-respect and loving-kindness. We say yes to the basic goodness in all of us and in all the universe. We say yes to who we are and who others are in all our daily behavior. We say yes to reality as it is. This art of acceptance forms the foundation of our own integrity and our healthy love of ourselves and others.

Unattended Past - Healing the Heart - Open to all self-identified women of color, with Verlinda Montoya, Carol Cano
Sunday, February 5, 9:30am - 4:30pm
Spirit Rock, Community Meditation Center
These teachings are offered by vipassana teacher, Carol Cano. A traditional Native American Lakota sweat lodge, teachings and songs will be led by Verlinda Montoya, a Native American medicine woman. These ceremonies will renew our hearts and open us to a new state of awareness.
For the sweat lodge, Verlinda will create the sacred space in which to ground ourselves in a traditional ceremony to purify and connect physical and spiritual worlds. We will return to Earth’s womb and emerge cleansed, ready to fulfill our intentions for a deeper practice of the heart. The sweat lodge ceremony is a sacred ritual for connecting us through prayer and song. A gift of life.
The sweat lodge ceremony is optional; women on their moon time (menstruation) should honor tradition and not participate. Anyone who wishes to meditate, rather than enter the sweat lodge, will be offered guided sitting and walking meditation practice throughout the day.
The daylong is open to all self-identified women of color with all levels of meditation experience, including newcomers. Please register early, especially if you wish to attend the sweat lodge ceremony so we can plan ahead. Please bring lunch, a towel, a loose sundress or t-shirt with a sarong or skirt to change into for the sweat lodge ceremony. Traditionally, a long, loose dress covering the knees and a top with sleeves is worn in the lodge.

Healing into our Hearts/Minds and Bodies: A New Years Retreat For Women -- with Arinna Weisman and Susana Renaud
For trans, queer, bi-sexual, gender-queer, lesbian, intersex and cis-gendered people.
Monday December 26, 2016 –January 1, 2017
Tokayana Cottage, Colfax, CA 95713
Cost: $375--$475 sliding scale + Dana.
Scholarships available, prioritizing POC
Something special happens when we come together and co-create a field, through our intentions and effort, presence and caring for ourselves and others. Living with trauma, anxiety, depression, chronic illness and pain or the impact of oppression challenges us. The path of Buddhist liberation reminds us that we each and together have the capacity to recognize hold and integrate these experiences so that the heart/mind opens into happiness and ease. The Buddha has been explicit in his teachings that in the very place we are most challenged we find the path of ending suffering.
There will be instructions, guided meditations in sitting, walking and eating, dharma talks and individual and group inquiry. We will also explore the conditioning that obstruct caring across privilege especially in relation to white privilege. As we unfold as a community we will provide a separate space for those who identify as People of Color to meet with Susana.

Loving-Kindness in Relationships with Dave Richo
Saturday, October 8, 2016, 9:30am - 4:00pm
Community Meditation Center, Spirit Rock Meditation Center
Sliding Scale $90 - $250. Please bring your lunch. Code DR2S16.
Registration: https://www.spiritrock.org/login?bm=-23469811
Loving-kindness practice is our key to all the directions love can take. Love is a commitment to a caring connection - unconditional, mindful, universal. There are tools for learning how to love in evolved adult ways, ways to love ourselves without guilt and with compassion. Calling upon wisdom from Buddhism and psychology, we are gently led to love’s inevitable outcome: having a heart that loves freely, fearlessly and universally. This transcendent and unconditional love isn’t just for a heroic few; it’s everyone’s magnificent calling and life purpose.
We will learn some practices that make for improved communication skills and conflict resolution in relationships and in clinical work.

Mindfulness and Aging: Claiming our Eldership & Wisdom
with Noliwe Alexander and Arinna Weisman
Sunday September 11, 2016 - 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm
East Bay Meditation Center
285 17th Street, Oakland, CA 94612
Half-day retreat for self-identified women and gender-fluid people.
How do we open to aging; the loss of physical resilience, perhaps increasing illness, the decline of our mental faculties and memory? The Buddha offers us a path of mindfulness and loving kindness that challenges the habitual ways we have 'owned' or 'identified' with our bodies and minds, and that allows us to join the natural processes of nature and our planet earth. Join us as we claim our eldership and wisdom, which have come with our years lived, and the blessings these bring.
Registration: Registration is required and space is limited. Click here to register.
Cost: There is no registration fee for attending this event, nor most EBMC events. However, EBMC is not independently funded. The Center and the teachers will be sustained only by your voluntary donations (the practice of generous giving, or "dana").
Fragrance-free: In order to protect the health of community members with environmental illness, please do not wear fragranced products (including “natural” fragrances) or clothes laundered in fragranced products to EBMC.

Healing Our Hungry Ghosts: Compassion Starts Here, with Ko-Shin Steven Tierney and Ryotan Cynthia Kear
May 23–26, 2016 (Monday-Thursday)
Tassajara Zen Mountain Center
39171 Tassajara Road
Carmel Valley, CA, 93924
A retreat for people in recovery. Discover the myriad ways in which the dharma and recovery enhance and deepen each other while enjoying the beautiful setting of Tassajara. In this three-day workshop we will gently inquire into those dimensions and dynamics of self which afflict us and cause great pain and suffering while limiting our ability to enjoy and embody freedom. We will look at character traits from a recovery perspective while also studying the classic Buddhist hindrances to clarity (desire, anger - in all its forms, fear, sleepiness, restlessness, and doubt). Through this potent dual lens, and in the safety of sangha, we’ll examine our demons, their karmic roots, and how the twining vines of practice and recovery offer transformation and liberation. How can these demons be dharma gates?
Retreat fee: $265 ($225/Member); does not include accommodations._

Awakening Our Hearts: Exploring White Privilege to Build Authentic Relationships Across Difference
ARINNA WEISMAN, BARUCH GOLDEN, JD DOYLE, SUZANNE PEGAS
Saturday, May 7, 2016 from 9:30am - 4:30pm
Spirit Rock Meditation Center
5000 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Woodacre, CA
Buddhism has as its refuge and vision a heart that is unrestricted, luminous and free. As we practice The Eight-fold Path, our hearts begin to open and call us to explore unconscious beliefs and behaviors that cause harm and suffering to others and ourselves. For example, we as white people are unaware of the ways we build identities of whiteness, which cover our hearts and separate us from people of color. By becoming aware of our group identity as white people and by owning this reality of privilege and access to power and resources, we are able to transform ourselves and our ability to be in authentic relationships. This is a daylong white people.

Women’s New Year's Retreat with Arinna Weisman
December 28, 2015- January 4, 2016
New Year 's Silent Retreat For Women “Awakening To Our Power And Beauty”
with ARINNA WEISMAN and TUERE SALA
Enchanted Hills Retreat, Napa, CA
http://enchantedhillsretreat.com
We will learn in community to open into our wise and compassionate hearts by meeting ourselves where we are. In this field of acceptance we are able to let go of what does not serve us and to sustain and build the beautiful qualities of mind such as faith, mindfulness, patience and focus. These energies open the doorway for clarity and love and a deepening connection with all life. We increasingly come home to ourselves as powerful and beautiful. The Buddha and a lineage of awakened women have discovered this way for thousands of years, and we join them through the capacity to transform ourselves. All women - trans, queer, bisexual, genderqueer, straight, lesbian, intersex and cisgendered - are welcome.
Cost: Room and board for this retreat is $475 -$600 sliding scale, plus dana. Most sleeping arrangements are roommate style in groups of 2 (with a shared bathroom for 4). There are camping spaces and single space options too. Registration cost covers food and lodging only.
We financially support women of color whenever possible.
For more information and to register, please contact Laura at [email protected].
PLEASE REGISTER BEFORE NOVEMBER 28th!

How a Buddha Offers Feedback, with Jisho Lisa Hoffman
Saturday, October 24, 10 AM-4 PM, San Francisco Zen Center, 308 Page Street, San Francisco
RSVP: http://www.sfzc.org/how-a-buddha-offers-feedback-workshop
Offering feedback is a communication challenge most of us find daunting, whether it involves colleagues, friends, or family. This experiential workshop will combine Buddhist teachings with contemporary relationship and communication concepts and skills to cultivate the practice of giving feedback with compassion and clarity. Our underlying theme will be the Buddha’s lesson of connection: How do we remain connected in giving feedback that will likely be hard for another person to hear? With a foundation of meditation and mindfulness, we will look at what feedback is and isn’t and how to deal with our internal reactions so we can offer feedback that is useful, true and kind. We will learn and practice the verbal and nonverbal tools needed for skillful feedback. We will also look at how to receive feedback, which creates balance and perspective for our feedback skills. There is a fee.

How much can you accept reality as it is, instead of what you want it to be? In your answer to that question lies your happiness or your misery. In this retreat we will seek some of that joy and some of that freedom.
We welcome everyone to this silent, one-day meditation retreat, beginners and experienced students.

Practicing with Sexual Energy: Presence, Precepts and Power- Led by Rev. Keiryu Liên Shutt and Rev. Daigan Gaither
Saturday May 09, 2015 - 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
East Bay Meditation Center / 285 17th Street, Oakland, CA 94612
What is it to stay upright in the midst of sexual energy? How do we not turn away from our experience or ourselves in the present moment? We will explore our intention to “not misuse sexuality” and how it both informs our practice and sexual choices within the context of our diverse lived experiences. How do we relate to desire in healthy and respectful ways, both for ourselves and with others? Are we using our energies or are they using us?
Join us as we explore what it means to practice while maintaining a healthy relationship to our sexual lives. Please bring your lunch to eat during our mid-day break. Download workshop flyer here.
Registration: Registration is required and space is limited. Click the link below to register:
